ROOKIE DRAFT & EXPANSION DRAFT THIS THURSDAY

This Thursday 2018's exciting crop of rookies will find out whether they'll be wearing Eagles, Giants or Bluebelles colours for their first Australian Football season.
The inclusion of the Bluebelles will also add a new dimension as the new club makes expansion selections in the draft. 10 weeks of winter training and two Angel's matches versus New York and Ottawa have given the talent scouts all the data they need to make their crucial draft table selections for what just might be the missing piece to their championship puzzle. The AFL Quebec Draft & Registration night kicks off Thursday at Pub Epoxy from 7:30pm. Players are encouraged to pay their registration fees on the night to secure the huge 'early bird' discounts.

What Footy means to me, a former and new member of the Angels!

Aussie Rules is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as a game resembling rugby that is played between two teams of 18 players on a field 180-190 yards long that has four goalposts at each end.

This definition is very general and is missing a lot of pieces and aspects to the game. Such as the leather ball is formed as an egg shape and, is smaller than a rugby ball, bigger than an american football. Or how we need to kick the ball through the two centre goalposts to earn six points. However, no matter how great a dictionary or other resource may describe the sport, there are many feelings that cannot be written down. Such as team conmadery, pride, health & fitness, and friendships that will last a lifetime. These are the things that I've missed the most on my year off from Footy.

Eastern Canadian Training Camp in Montreal, Feb. 2016
No one can best describe these feelings unless you've lived through these experiences. I was fortunate enough to take part in the IC14 as a player for the Canadian team. I will always cherish the moment I put on a Canadian jersey and played alongside the best and fittest  team mates a girl of 21 could have asked for. Being the youngest player on the team, I was able to experience what some people may only dream of. All this being said Australian Football has taught me respect, discipline and, selflessness that I have brought into my everyday life.

I was talking with a former Angel recently about how much I missed footy and the girls I've played with. I was too caught up with school and work and everyday life that football was not my first priority anymore. After this discussion I decided to commit myself to the sport again and this has been the best decision I have made in a long time.

I attended the Atlantic Division Training Camp last Saturday, and was taken aback by all the new faces and amazing athletes that were at that camp. It is inspiring and motivating to participate with such great women. The girls on the Atlantic team are strong and a force to be recon with.  Cannot wait to play alongside these exceptional girls at Canadian Nationals in Vancouver.  This is what the sport is all about.

Eastern Canadian Training Camp to be held in Montreal this weekend

Aimee Legault at the International Championships, Australia 2014
The off-season can be a difficult time for someone who plays a team sport. The lack of comradery seems to be substituted with PB (Personal Bests) in the gym or on the track. Although scheduled games and team training sessions are top priority during the season, the idea of choosing social events over scheduled workouts can seem all that more tempting. While some people are just recovering from their holiday food comas, I know that my fellow teammates on Team Canada have been working hard. From their #BeastMode posts to their work out photos, it is easy to remember that we are all in this together.

As someone who has had the privilege of being in the national program since 2010, I love this time of year. I have been training H2OMMA with my husband Ronan Shaughnessy, who is also part of the national program, on a regular and consistent basis. Just when it starts to get lonely in the gym and we start missing the game we love so much, a Team Canada training camp is on the horizon. This weekend players from Newfoundland all the way to Ottawa will be travelling to Montreal for an Eastern Canadian training camp hosted by AFL Quebec.

The idea of early morning fitness testing and skills assessment can seem somewhat cringe worthy, but I look forward to this experience every year. It’s a chance to train with committed players and to challenge our selves. It brings together women and men who have three things in common: a passion for the sport of Australian Football, a mutual respect for one another and a genuine desire to develop the sport in Canada.

As selection is done on an annual basis, no player is guaranteed a spot on the following years squad. 2017 will mark the 3rd Women’s International Championship, and as defending Champions, the Canadian women’s team will need to be all the more stringent in its selection process.

Through these training camps you realize that selection is not the be all and end all. We don't train just to make the team, we train to be healthier, to be stronger. We strive to be better. We train for one another. The adage of one of our sponsors, 2XU Canada, rings true: Heart not Hype. We don’t do it for the glory, for the recognition, for the “fame”...we play an obscure sport that is most often confused with rugby.

Confident that my teammate who recently had a baby will most certainly beat my time in our 3 kilometer run, this is one of the examples of why I cannot wait for this weekend! Just to meet up with an amazing bunch of individuals. We all have our strengths, we all work on what we need to improve and collectively we are unstoppable!

If you are interested in trying Australian Football, check out these upcoming events. For men and women, no experience necessary in Montreal and in Ottawa

SWANS OUTLAST ANGELS IN 18-A-SIDE GAME ONE

The Montreal Angels travelled to Ottawa this past Saturday for the first of what will be a three game series of 18-a-side football in 2015. Clad in orange courtesy of the NDG Giants the Angels and Swans put on a fast paced display of women's football, Ottawa holding a slender lead through the first 3 quarters. The Swans experience in 18-a-side football prevailed in the final quarter as they ran out 31 point victors, Angels 1.6 (12) defeated by Swans 6.7 (43). Despite the loss the Angels unearthed some exciting new talent in Francesca and Gab Benedetti and Kirsten. Round 2 of AFL Quebec's 9-a-side competition resumes this Sunday at Parc Vanier.

OTTAWA JOINS AFL QUEBEC IN 2015

The Ottawa Lady Swans have made a preliminary announcement that they will move from the Ontario AFL and join AFL Quebec in 2015. The move comes after an incredible 2014 season for the Lady Swans in which they claimed their first OAFL premiership.

Ottawa will enter two teams into the competition, thereby expanding the fledgling AFL Quebec Women's competition to four teams and creating a perfect launching platform to build on the success of women's footy in the region.

DEVILS CLAIM 2014 AFLQ WOMEN'S PREMIERSHIP

Photo courtesy of Sebastien Di Maulo
The N.D.G. Devils produced a commanding 9 goals to 1 first half to eventually run away 55 point victors claiming the inaugural AFL Quebec Women's Premiership.

After losing the opening four matches of the season the Plateau Eagles found some late season form winning three games and throwing the race for the Premiership Cup wide open. The triumphant return of Team Canada stars Margo and Aimee Legault proved too much for the Eagles who were stunned in the first half trailing at the main break by 47 points. The Eagles would steady in the second half, holding their own against the dominant NDG squad, but the game was already decided the Devils cruising to a memorable first championship.

WOMEN'S FOOTY, FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME!

On the eve of the inaugural round of AFL Quebec's Women's league, one of our new members, Fabio Petosa, describes his impressions of the infamous Montreal Pre-Season Tournament.

My View from the Goal Line

There appeared to be an incredible sense of excitement as the 2014 Women’s Tournament moved closer to the start. Against all odds the weather for the day had changed and instead of cloudy and rainy, the conditions turned to sunny and windy. Surely it was a sign for what was to follow.

Participating in the tournament were teams from Boston, Ottawa, New York and the host, Montreal. As an outsider who was being allowed into the community of Australian Rules, I was amazed by the commitment level shown by the players. Many had driven for hours the night before and had arrived early to prepare for the tournament. I was asked if I would be willing to help out as a goal umpire and as a result I had the honour of playing a minor role in what truly was an epic display of skill, intensity, passion and unity.

In sport, references are often made to key moments along a continuum. Whether it is over the course of a quarter, a half, a game, a season or a career; we look back at moments to provide perspective. We are therefore able to establish how we arrived to where we are, where we failed and where we succeeded. If one looked at the 2014 Women’s Tournament as a singular event they would consider it to be a success, but they would fail to realize the true sustainable impact the tournament will have on the growth of the game moving forward. As the tournament began it was obvious that the label of pre-season tournament was not really appropriate. The teams had come prepared for strong competition. No player was holding back as bodies crashed into one another and fell to the ground.

Regardless of skill, the effort shown by each individual was at a level that I’m not certain I’ve ever seen for what was meant to be a warm-up tournament. I had the underlying sense that the four teams had come to the tournament committed to win and that each of them believed they could.

Then something changed, at least from my perspective. Not in the quality, effort or intensity, but in the fundamental purpose of the tournament. I had been under the impression that the teams had all come with victory as their only goal, but then I started seeing something I had never seen at any tournament, for any sport. I was applauding a Boston player, but found that she looked a lot like a New York player. At first I figured it must be the sun playing tricks on me, but then I noticed another player. Then I saw Montreal players, people I personally knew and they were wearing Demons jerseys! It took me a moment to realize that they were filling out the squads whenever there was a shortage of players.

Now I may be wrong about this, but in that instant I felt that winning the tournament was secondary. Victory was not the ultimate. Instead winning had been replaced by playing. In standing in to fill out rival squads, the players assured that all teams had an opportunity to field a competitive team. Perhaps I am generalizing and in no way do I want to take away from the intensity of the matchups, because regardless of the jersey, the effort level of the players did not change.

However, to not focus on what I saw would be wrong. I saw purity of sport and it was beautiful. Simply playing the game and disregarding for whom, or to what end should always be celebrated – to battle to the end not for a team, but for the passion of the game. The desire to play took over the field that day and it left me inspired. There are very few greater compliments I feel capable of giving. I could list an endless amount of superlatives in describing the play, I could have written a piece laced with hollow clichés, score lines and stats, but instead I wanted to highlight the beauty of wanting to play. I can’t begin to guess the number of games, matches or tournaments I’ve been a part of and I have never seen such passion and unity amongst players for a sport. As I walked off the field that day I left with much more than just sunburn. I have become worn by the direction of organized sports and the bureaucracy, self-interest and corruption that surround leagues. What I saw on May 10th shot of hope. The organizers and volunteers did an incredible job throughout the weekend, but it will be the players and their spirit that I will always remember.

CANADIAN NATIONALS DAY ONE RESULTS

Angel Kate Allbon Sargeant v Demons. Photo: Rob Colburn
It was an action packed first day at the Canadian Women's Nationals Saturday in Ottawa. The Angels split their results with a solid first up victory against the High Park Lady Demons before falling to the Edmonton Emus later in the day. Sister club the Ottawa Lady Swans were pipped twice, losing both their matches by 2 points. With the Edmonton Emus already locked in for a place in the final, Sunday's match-up between the Hamilton Wildcats and Calgary Kookaburras will determine their opponent.

The 8 teams are split into 2 pools, the teams that finish first in each playing off for the cup. The second placed teams will contest a playoff match for 3rd, third placed teams for 5th, and finally the bottom placed teams will fight out for 7th.

Sunday's prospects: It means a win for the Angels Sunday will see them finish second and play the loser of the Wildcats v Kookaburras match. A loss will see the Angels finish third and face a playoff for fifth against Ottawa provided the Swans can take the points over the Blues.

Results: Pool A - Emus 32 def. Roos 2, Angels 29 def. Demons 0, Roos 44 def Demons 7, Emus 49 def. Angels 0.

Pool B - Wildcats 29 def. Swans 27, Kookas 24 def. Blues 8, Kookas 33 def. Swans 31, Wildcats 48 def. Blues 0.

2013 BOSTON WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

The Montreal Angels return to Boston this weekend to defend their crown against the New York Lady Magpies and Boston Lady Demons in what has fast become one of the highlights of the women’s football calendar. The tournament will also double as round two of the North-East Women’s shield which adds another exciting dimension to the weekend.

2012’s tournament saw an epic battle for the moniker of tournament champion, the Lady Demons unlucky to be pipped at the post by the Angels with the last score of the day. This year’s battle will have the added flavor of a full squad from Montreal and regiment from Baltimore strengthening the Angel ranks, a monstrous Lady Magpies roster which is on the improve and the Lady Demons primed to make amends for last year’s defeat. We take a look at each team’s prospects:

Boston Lady Demons
(2012 Tournament: 1-1 2nd overall, 2013 North-East Standings: 1-1 (3pts) currently 2nd).
If there’s one given in life it’s that no one takes a win from any Boston team on home soil without a fight. The Lady Demons proved that last year, controlling the play in both matches for the entire day before a five minute lapse saw them slip up with literally sixty seconds on the clock. The Lady “Dees” form in the Montreal Preseason Cup was quietly impressive. Without some of their superstars the Dees managed to put together some outstanding passages of play and looked deadly through the midfield. With a full squad on the park the Demons will be expecting nothing less than outright champions for the day.

Players to watch: Second year player Holly Teufel is the current North-East Shield leading goal kicker. Her high flying marks and amazing boot make her a nightmare for opposition defenders. Expect Teufel to feature in both the Magpies and Angels key match-up strategies. Emily Reihl’s return to the line-up will be a major boost. The dynamite onballer oozes class and has the ability to win a game off her own boot. With outstanding agility and speed Brighde Sullivan has fast become a focal point up forward and a big threat in front of the big sticks. A much welcomed presence across the backline, Jen Vogel’s experience and deft touch will ensure that every opposition score is a hard earned one. Joining an already star-studded midfield brigade, rookie Sarah Morin’s ability to break up plays and create opportunities through the center adds yet another gold plated cog to the well-oiled Boston midfield machine.
North-East Shield Prospects: Two home victories could see Boston claim outright first on 7 points.

New York Lady Magpies
(2012 Tournament: 0-2 3rd overall, 2013 North-East Standings: 0-2 (0pts) currently 3rd).
The Magpies have the makings of a champion team, the task ahead is now how they get those talented puzzle pieces to fit together as a consistent and cohesive unit. It was a tough day out in the 2012 Boston tournament, New York failing to register a goal. But promising early signs of the Lady Magpies version 2.0 were on display in Montreal when they seized an early lead against the Angels and dominated much of the play in the first half of game one. Now the challenge is to string those purple patches together for four quarters. The steps of progress are clearly apparent from the black and white army, don’t be surprised to see a giant leap from this team come Saturday.

Players to watch: As the Magpies develop and get the ball into their attacking half more expect to see much more from exciting second year forward Lissette Hinjosa. The pocket rocket has talent to burn and will be a key ingredient to the Magpies rise up the table. The Lady Magpies will also welcome back from injury 2012 rookie of the year Alison Vorsatz. Her sublime work across the backline and ability to do the job in the ruck making her a prized asset to the Magpies fortunes. Sam “the silent assassin” Wolf’s nimble footwork and ability to burn her opponents with her speed will ensure the rival coaches keep a close eye on the Magpies secret weapon.
North-East Shield Prospects: Traveling for the second consecutive round any away victory will ensure the Magpies are right back in the hunt for the shield.

Montreal Angels
(2012 Tournament: 2-0 1st overall, 2013 North-East Standings: 2-0 (4pts) currently 1st).
It will go down as the heist of 2012, the Angels playing five minutes of inspired football that literally snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in Boston. The Angels of 2013 will be a very different team, former star player and avid Harry Potter fan Aimee Legault now in the role of head coach. At her disposal is one of the Angel’s finest emerging teams with a wealth of first and second year talent coming through the ranks. The Angels will head to Boston confident they can get the job done, but fully aware it will take their very best to do so.

Players to watch: One of the most exciting players to watch Tara Cools-Lartigue has quickly developed into an absolute ball magnet. Playing as a defensive midfielder Tara’s ability to make her mark on the game is never questioned. Rookie Robyn Graham was thrown into the deep end on debut in Montreal playing through the midfield. The cream always rises to the top is an understatement for Graham who was amongst the Angels best with plenty more to come. Not many players have the confidence to develop and trademark their own move, but Lindsay “Spinorama” Belzie has done just that creating a highlight reel with her goals up front and slipping into equal second for the North-East goal kicking table. Impressive in her 2012 Boston debut and improving at a thunderous rate is the Angels Kelsey Martin. Martin’s adaptation to Aussie Rules and football smarts make her one of the most important links in Montreal’s forward line.
North-East Shield Prospects: Leading the table by the smallest margins it’s all or nothing for the Angels. Two wins will give the team plenty of breathing space while any loss will see them swallowed up by the pursuing pack.

ANGELS IN ACTION SUNDAY FOR AFL QUEBEC

Several players from the Montreal Angel's roster will be in action this Sunday for AFL Quebec Round 2 being played at Parc Champetre in Montreal.

Always a factor in their team's chances to secure a win last week Lindsay Belzie (pictured) and Margo Legault opened their scoring accounts with a goal each.
